Despite being one of the most famous women in the world, Madonna has only been married twice – a number which she herself believes is too high. In a “50 Questions” video posted on her YouTube channel, the pop icon was asked, “What’s a decision you made that, looking back, maybe wasn’t the best idea?” to which she replied, “Getting married. Both times.” This sentiment was echoed in a 1993 chat with Interview, where she stated that everyone should get married at least once so they can see what an outdated institution it is.
Her first marriage to Oscar-winner Sean Penn was marred by allegations of domestic abuse, which Madonna later denied. However, she did reference the allegations in her song “Till Death Do Us Part,” which contains the lyrics, “He takes a drink, she goes inside/He starts to scream, the vases fly.” She also referred to her ex as an “a**hole” during a concert in 2016.
Her second marriage to filmmaker Guy Richie ended in an acrimonious divorce. Madonna reflected on this relationship saying, “There were times when I felt incarcerated. I wasn’t really allowed to be myself.”
