Will Indiana Jones be turned into a TV series? Despite rumors, it’s remains unclear if it’s in the cards. But one thing we do know is that if the show is greenlit, star Harrison Ford will not be a part of it.
Ford debuted in the role of Indy in 1981’s breakout smash “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” He reprised the character for 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” and now in 2023’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” In a new interview, the consummate action hero says this is the end of the line for him with the character. “This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character. I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film,” Ford said in the April 27 issue of Total Film magazine.
And as for reports of a TV series, he told the outlet he will “not be involved in that, if it does come to fruition.”
Ford did add that doing the fifth and final film has been a dream come true, and he was trying to make it happen for 10 years before things came together. “It was a joyous moment for me. I think it’s a rare situation that I find myself in,” he said.
Variety first reported that Disney is looking to do an Indiana Jones Disney+ series in November 2022. The outlet added that Disney and Lucasfilm are still searching for a writer for the project and that it’s not clear if it would be a spinoff, a sequel to the new film, or a prequel — just that it would be set in the same universe. Disney and Lucasfilm have not commented on the sequel rumors.
According to Variety, there was once an Indiana Jones TV series titled “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” that ran in the ’90s for two seasons on ABC and then as a few made-for-TV movies on what’s now Freeform. Ford made a cameo as Indiana in one episode of the show, but otherwise other actors played the character at different ages.
One thing Ford has also been vocal about is that he doesn’t want anyone else to play the character going forward. Back in 2019, Ford was asked if he was OK with someone else taking over the role of Indiana Jones one day; at the time, rumors were circling that Chris Pratt was looking to be cast as the hero. Ford told the “Today” show, “Nobody is gonna be Indiana Jones. Don’t you get it? I’m Indiana Jones. When I’m gone, he’s gone. It’s easy.”
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is one in a range of projects Ford, 80, has been taking on recently. He appears in Paramount+’s hit “Yellowstone” spin-off “1923,” Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” and just signed on to join the MCU in “Captain America 4” and “Thunderbolts.”
