Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson's Longstanding Friendship Despite Controversy

In 2011, Robert Downey Jr. was honored at the 25th American Cinematheque Awards and requested Mel Gibson to present him with the award. In his acceptance speech, Downey Jr. expressed his gratitude to Gibson for his help during a difficult period in his life. He explained that when he was struggling to get sober, Gibson encouraged him to find faith and not give up hope. Additionally, Gibson had cast Downey Jr. as the lead in a movie that was originally intended for himself, and provided him with housing and food. Downey Jr. referred to this process as “hugging the cactus” and credited it with helping him turn his life around. He concluded his speech by asking Hollywood to forgive Gibson.
