Since the release of the first “Scream” movie in 1996, the horror-comedy genre has been forever changed. Neve Campbell stars as Sidney Prescott, a teenager living in Woodsboro, the town where her mother was brutally murdered one year prior. When a masked slasher begins targeting high school students, Sidney teams up with intrepid news reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) and bumbling police officer Dewey Riley (David Arquette) to solve the crimes. Directed by horror legend Wes Craven, the first movie was a meta critique of scary movies and how people act in them, with a star-studded cast including Drew Barrymore, Skeet Ulrich, and Rose McGowan.

Craven followed up with three more sequels, each full of unexpected cameos, gory deaths, and plenty of humor. After his death in 2015, the franchise continued with “Scream 5,” a “requel” that both reboots the series and continues the story from the earlier films. What sets “Scream” apart from other horror franchises is that the person or people behind the Ghostface mask always changes, with only “Scream 3” being an exception.
