The Victorian. – My Story

In 2015 I woke up after having a dream about an old Victorian home. In this dream, I was alone with just my mom and kids. I was sitting on the stairs in the front hall watching my kids running from the parlor into the hall and then into the other parlor. I remember looking at the trim work and its peeling paint thinking, “Oh my God what did I do?” I closed my eyes and I said it’s going to be great, it just needs paint.

When I woke up I ran downstairs and told my mom about the dream. At that time my credit was destroyed and home ownership wasn’t even in my thoughts, or so I assumed. I like to play Sims 4 and I always create my sims to look like me and my family. For a husband, I always created the ideal and perfect man. I was married at the time but in a terrible relationship. For a house, I always built a very large Victorian, the one from my dream.

Two years later I was rear-ended at a red light. I was hurt not badly and my youngest daughter was fine. My husband went to the hospital and has recovered. We settled with the insurance company and were awarded $17,000 after lawyers and fees. We decided instead of buying junk, we would pay down our credit and buy a house.

In March of 2017, we sat down with a mortgage professional and were pre-approved. We went home and started searching for homes on realtor.com. Right away my husband pointed out a Victorian in need of work. It was pending short sale approval but I refused to let it go. My mother had given me The Magic book and I remembered The Magic Check in the book. I photocopied it and made it out to myself in the amount of $190,000 and I wrote the address of the house on the check. Hanging up on the wall near my bed I read the check every morning and said thank you.

A month later we drove by the house looking at for-sale signs and I freaked as the sign was back up. I called and spoke to the realtor and she gave me an appointment to see the house 3 days later. After the tour was over we spoke price. The previous couple offered $179,000 but the bank rejected the offer as too low due to the price in the neighborhood. The bank said the lowest they would accept is $190,000. I was floored and put in my offer. My offer was accepted and in August of 2017, we closed.

A few notes to add. The house we bought was the exact house in my dream and in the same condition. The only difference was that the doorway to the hall from the parlor was blocked off. The frame is there but it is closed. You have to enter that room through the sitting parlor which does have a doorway to the hall. We will absolutely be opening that doorway up. Also, I said that my husband was not in the dream. A year and a half after moving in he found a girlfriend. I ended up with my mom and the 4 kids and the house exactly as I dreamed of 2 years earlier. Now that I have achieved this house, I am making space in the master closet for the clothes of the man in my dreams. Life is perfect. Thank you.
