‘Doctor Strange 2’: Was Natasha Lyonne Going to Star in the MCU Film Before Its Director Swap?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still isn’t out for over a year but that hasn’t lessened the anticipation from Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. A recent tweet from original Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson has led some folks to believe that Natasha Lyonne could have been in the film if he was still attached.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ has a new director and release date

In January 2020, Scott Derrickson departed the film as its director. He was the director of the first Doctor Strange film and said that he left the sequel project due to creative differences. Derrickson still remains attached to the film as an executive producer.

Marvel said in a statement, “Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the MCU.”

Derrickson also tweeted, “Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP.”

The next month, news broke that Sam Raimi, who helmed the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, would come aboard Doctor Strange 2 as the movie’s new director.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film’s release date has been pushed from May 7, 2021 to November 5, 2021.

Benedict Cumberbatch is returning for the sequel as the title character and Benedict Wong is reprising his role as Wong. Elizabeth Olsen, who portrays Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch in the MCU, will star in the film as it is heavily intertwined with her Disney+ series, WandaVision.

Numerous reports have leaked more potential cast members who are rumored, such as Malachi Kirby as later Sorcerer Supreme, Brother Voodoo, Cillian Murphy as villain Nightmare, and Emma Watson as the love interest, Clea.

Natasha Lyonne met with Scott Derrickson

In honor of Lyonne’s birthday, which was April 4, Derrickson tweeted about having dinner with Lyonne last year and apparently hinted at how it potentially related to the film.

He wrote, “Last year I had dinner with @nlyonne in NYC and we talked about the multiverse. It was awesome. She’s awesome. And today’s her birthday, so watch Russian Doll — it’s one of the best tv shows I’ve ever seen.”

While this could have been taken to mean that they could have just been talking about the Marvel multiverse in general, many took this as meaning that Lyonne and the director met about her having a role in the film.

“If this is you implying that you were going to put her in the movie I’m going to bawl,” tweeted one person.

Someone else said, “I am crossing all my fingers @nlyonne still be in the film regardless of the new director.”

While it may be a reach to think that they were actually talking about a role in the film, it’s fun to think about and speculate what the actress could have added to the MCU.
