Here’s a Breakdown of THAT Rey Origin Theory That Connects To Palpatine In ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

Before every major movie premiere, theories are continually popping up, trying to guess what’s going to happen. Star Wars films aren’t any different. The Rise of Skywalker premieres in less than a week, on Dec. 20, and there’s an endless stream of these theories. One that supposedly also stems from some spoilers is about who Rey’s birth parents are, or rather what her exact origin is. A new TV spot sort of confirms that we don’t know everything about the budding Jedi.

As always: POTENTIAL SPOILERS ahead for The Rise of Skywalker!

A theory about Rey suggests she was created the same way Anakin was

As Inverse reported, a Burger King in Germany is doing a promotion where you have to read The Rise of Skywalker spoilers to receive a free whopper. It’s not entirely clear what the company gets out of that deal, but it did reveal some secrets. It’s not clear if these “spoilers” are actually that, or just made up or based on theories. However, two statements about Rey stuck out. One is that Rey is related to Palpatine and is his granddaughter. The second is that he orchestrates the murder of her parents.

While these seem odd or really out of left field, it’s not that impossible. If you’re familiar with Star Wars canon, you know that Shmi Skywalker didn’t just get pregnant with Midichlorians randomly manifesting in her uterus. No, Emperor Palpatine created the baby that would go on to become Darth Vader. Qui-Gon Jinn initially thought Anakin was the chosen one who just came to be, but in actuality, it was planned out and orchestrated by Palpatine. The reason isn’t fully known yet, but he eventually turned his powerful creation to the Dark Side.

A new trailer seems to confirm said theory

One of the latest TV spots for The Rise of Skywalker confirms that Rey’s arc is central to the movie. “It is time that she learn her story,” Palpatine says in a voiceover. Now, this doesn’t necessarily confirm the Palpatine theory, but it does mean that we obviously don’t know everything about her.

Writer Chris Terrio told Empire magazine that the question “Who is Rey?” is essential, and the film will answer it. “How can we give the most satisfying answer to that not only factually – because obviously people are interested in whether there’s more to be learned of Rey’s story – but more importantly who is she as a character?” he explained. “How will she find the courage and will and inner strength and power to carry on what she’s inherited?”

On top of that and this theory, Richard E. Grant said there’s a big character plot twist, too. This works out a little too well with the Palpatine-created-Rey theory. Which, of course, makes it more intriguing.

So, is Rey doomed the same way Anakin was?

If this theory is correct, is Rey meant to become another pawn of the Dark Side? Anakin, no matter how much he fought it, had strong emotions of love, fear, and hatred that were too hard to suppress. Along with Anakin’s disillusionment with the Jedi Order, he was powerless to the seduction of Palpatine and the Sith. Was he doomed to join that side all along because Darth Sidious created him? If he was, then is Rey as well?

Her connection to Palpatine would explain the sequence in The Last Jedi, where Rey is practicing with Luke. She senses the Force but sees a pit of darkness, which he tells her to stay out of. It holds a power she can’t resist; she follows it in without any hesitation and freaks Luke out. Is Dark Rey inevitable?

Again, all hard to guess right now. But one thing’s for sure: The Rise of Skywalker might very well rock your world and possibly cause an existential crisis while you’re at it.
