Actress Katie Holmes tends to keep a low profile. Recently making headlines for her relationship with Jamie Foxx which ended with the two parting ways, the former Dawson’s Creek star is gearing up to direct her second film, Rare Objects.
While Holmes stays busy professionally, her main focus is on being a mom to her 13-year-old daughter Suri from her marriage to superstar Tom Cruise. The actress recently spoke on the tumultuous time of her divorce from the Hollywood icon.
‘Dawson’s Creek’ fame
The teen drama Dawson’s Creek hit the airwaves in 1998, launching many of its cast members into stardom. Holmes recalled the transition into fame as somewhat overwhelming to deal with at the young age of 19.
“When I was young, Dawson’s Creek was such a huge leap. Within a year of graduating from high school, we were known everywhere,” she said in a recent interview with InStyle. “It was quite a lot. Obviously, the world was not what it is today — there weren’t as many paparazzi or people with phones. But it was still weird that I was treated differently. It felt unnatural, and I didn’t understand it.”
The experience taught Holmes how to be authentic. “Now I don’t lead with being a public person; I lead with being a person,” she shared. “You should be kind because that’s what people do, not because you want people to think you are kind.”
Holmes behind the camera
The former Batman Begins star is now working behind the camera for her latest film project. Holmes spoke on the importance of being tenacious and how persistence helped get Rare Objects into production.
“Rare Objects has been in the making for four or five years,” she told InStyle. “It hurts when you ask the opinions of people you respect and they say it’s not good. It’s like, ‘Can you be a little more specific? I’m not an idiot. Give me a helpful note instead of dissing me.’ But whenever someone tells me no, I keep going.”
Holmes shared that the little words of affirmation she receives along the way give her motivation to keep reaching for her goals.
“I called my dad to tell him the news when it was green-lit, and he said, ‘That’s wonderful. Life is a real journey, and sometimes when things take a long time and you have to keep working hard, it just makes it that much sweeter. I’m really proud of you,’” she revealed. “That’s all I needed to hear.”
High-profile split from Cruise
Holmes married mega star Tom Cruise in 2006 when she was a few months pregnant with Suri. She remembers the early years of her daughter’s life as being inundated by the paparazzi. “We were followed a lot when she was little,” Holmes said. “I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at, like, 6 in the morning when nobody would see us.”
The celebrity couple divorced in 2012, with Holmes getting primary custody of their 6-year-old daughter. The story of the split dominated the headlines.
“That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it,” the actress revealed. “We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn’t know became my friends and helped us out, and that’s what I love about the city.”
Holmes recalled one incident involving the kindness of a stranger that brought her to tears.
“There was one incredible moment when I think I actually cried. Suri was 6 or 7, and she was spending the night at a friend’s house while I was seeing the ballet at Lincoln Center,” she remembered “At 10 o’clock I got a call: ‘Mommy, can you come get me?’ I got a cab and went down to Battery Park to pick her up. She was exhausted. She fell asleep on the way home, and when we pulled up to our building, the cab driver opened the door and helped me not wake her. He helped carry her to the building. He was so kind.”
With Holmes’ directing project coming up and her film The Secret: Dare to Dream opening soon, her name may be back in the headlines for purely professional reasons.
