‘Little Women’: Cast Reactions to Director Greta Gerwig’s Oscar Snub – ‘It’s A Shame That It’s Still A Conversation’

The Oscar nominations have been announced and this year, it appears there are more gasps over which artists have not been recognized than for those who have.

Along with notoriously ignoring Jennifer Lopez and Awkwafina, Oscar this year completely overlooked Greta Gerwig for a Best Director nomination (and any other female directors, for that matter) for her film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women.

Even at the event announcing the nominations, actress Issa Rae in listing the directorial nominees couldn’t resist drawing attention to the lack of female representation in the category, saying “Congratulations to these men.”

Here’s what Gerwig’s colleagues Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh had to say about the announcement.

‘Little Women’ received six Academy Award nominations

The film itself is in contention for a Best Picture award, and while Gerwig wasn’t given a directorial nomination, she did receive a nomination for her phenomenal work on the film’s screenplay. As well, Little Women received five other nominations, including a Best Actress nod for Saoirse Ronan in the role of Jo March.

Florence Pugh was recognized with a Best Supporting Actress nomination as Amy March. Finally, a Best Costume Design nomination for Jacqueline Durran and Best Original Score for the film’s composer Alexandre Desplat rounded out the picture’s Oscar award contenders.

Gerwig is taking the high road

For her part, the film’s director herself is expressing no outrage or sadness at being overlooked for a directorial nomination. She’s ecstatic. With a maternalistic pride putting aside her own recognition, Gerwig is clearly filled with satisfaction at the film’s success in other categories.

“I am brimming with happiness — thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you (that’s six!) to the Academy,” Gerwig wrote in a statement today.

She continued, “This film of Little Women has been over thirty years in the making, from the very first time Louisa May Alcott and Jo March reached across time and space and made me believe I could be a writer and creator. . . every single person who worked on this film poured their heart and soul into it, and we are all so grateful to the Academy for recognizing the collective effort.”

“I am so personally proud of each person who worked on the film, and I am bursting with joy for all of them,” Gerwig’s statement concluded.

Ronan and Pugh’s reactions

As for Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh, the actresses were, naturally, disappointed to learn that their colleague and dear friend had not been nominated for her hard work as director on Little Women.

Ronan did not hold back, saying in a statement, “. . . Greta, since she started, has made two perfect films, and I hope when she makes her next perfect movie, she gets recognized for everything, because I think she’s one of the most important filmmakers of our time.”

Pugh’s remarks to Entertainment Weekly yesterday expressed the frustration felt by so many. “It’s incredibly upsetting. It’s a shame that it’s still a conversation. [Gerwig’s] literally made a film about this. She made a film about women working and their relationship with money and their relationship with working in a man’s world.”

“That’s literally what Little Women is about,” Pugh continued, “so [this] only underlines how important it is — because it’s happening.”
