Olusegun Obasanjo Criticized by Yoruba Group for Seeking Cancellation of Nigerian Presidential Election

The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), in collaboration with the Yoruba Assembly and Yoruba diaspora, has criticized former President Olusegun Obasanjo for his suggestion that he should be the only Yoruba president of Nigeria. On Monday, February 28, Obasanjo held a press conference in which he urged President Buhari to compel INEC to redo the elections due to allegations of irregularities in the recent Presidential elections. A statement signed by Olawale Oshun claimed that Obasanjo “lacks the moral right to serve as a guiding beacon of Nigeria”, and that his attempt to render the 2023 elections inchoate could be motivated by his desire to remain the only Yoruba president of the country. The groups urged that the 2023 transition elections, which have already begun with the presidential and National Assembly elections, must be allowed to reach their conclusion, and that aggrieved parties should seek redress in court. They also warned the Military to stay away from any temporary impasse that could occur, and to ignore any incitement from retired Generals or their rank and file. The Yoruba people will resist, alongside other Nigerians, any misguided intervention in their polity.
