Horror buffs can barely contain their excitement about Scream 5. The project will move forward with some original cast and crew members attached, as well as a fresh creative team on board. And based on what the team is saying so far, the Scream sequel (whatever they end up calling it) could potentially expand the Ghostface narrative with a very satisfying new chapter.
Kevin Williamson, is ‘thrilled’ to be a part of the ‘Scream’ sequel
Kevin Williamson wrote the 1996 slasher flick, Scream, with horror master, the late Wes Craven, in the director’s chair. Sure, the film was scary, but it was much more complex than a typical horror movie. It was insightful, surprising, witty, and self-aware — and so were the first three sequels.
Williamson also wrote Scream 2 and Scream 4, but he’s taking on a different role in the relaunch. He will serve as executive producer this time around, with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick co-writing the script. Rounding out the production team are directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence Productions, the group behind the horror-comedy, Ready or Not.
In casting news, Deadline reported that David Arquette has officially signed on to reprise his role as Dewey, giving fans hope that other fan-favorites will come on board. According to the news outlet, Williamson is ‘thrilled’ to be working on the project with both familiar and new faces on set. Deadline quoted him as saying this:
I’m excited to reteam with David and work with Jamie, Guy, and Radio Silence on the next Scream. Their take on the movie is both original, inventive, and honors Wes’ legacy in a wonderful way. Ready or Not was my favorite horror film of last year, and I can’t wait to see what their amazing talents bring to the ‘Scream’ universe. I’m thrilled to be a part of it.

Before Vanderbilt signed on to co-write the Scream sequel, he was already a fan of Williamson, Craven, and the franchise, according to Deadline. He described his passion for the project, saying this:
Just the fact that we get to sit in a room with Kevin Williamson and talk about a new Scream movie is a dream come true for me. For years I’ve wanted to see a new Scream movie, and now we get to help make one. We want this to be a love letter to the movies Wes and Kevin created together and to the fans.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have also expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting the inspiration they gained from Craven and Williamson. They also gave a nod to their collaborators, Vanderbilt and Busick, in this statement from Radio Silence Productions published by Deadline:
It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies, in particular, mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers. Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.
