Lin-Manuel Miranda recently announced that Walt Disney Studios will produce a live version of the musical, Hamilton, to be released in 2021. What are Disney’s future plans for Hamilton? Is there a potential sequel to this musical in the works? Here’s what theater fans are saying about this musical, premiering in cinemas next year.

Disney is producing a version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Hamilton’ to premiere in cinemas

Hamilton isn’t just for Broadway anymore. Recently, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda shared an exciting announcement for Disney and theater fans everywhere — this musical is headed to the cinemas, for a 2021 release. This movie will be a live stage production of the show featuring the original cast. (This comes only months after the film adaptation premiere of In the Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical.)

“We filmed the production with the original cast and Tommy (director Thomas Kail) has made a great movie out of it. It has been sitting in a vault,” Lin-Manuel Miranda said during an interview with IndieWire at Sundance. “We’re close to finding the right time to release it.”

One website said that Disney could make a franchise of this musical

This stage-production-turned-movie-musical will be released by Walt Disney Studios and, although the studio has not announced any future plans for this production and its characters, one story from Indiewire suggested that this could be a potential franchise for the company, following the patterns of franchises like Avatar, Pirates of the Carribean, and Toy Story.

“Miranda has not aligned himself with any one studio, but the Hamilton acquisition marks Disney’s move to bring him under the same corporate umbrella as Marvel and Star Wars,” the article noted. “Unlike those franchises, Miranda remains a free agent and Disney will have to continue to woo him if they want to profit off his creative sensibilities.”

This Indiewire story gained traction from theater fans on social media. Some almost immediately asked what direction Disney could possibly take this musical in. Would Lin-Manuel Miranda write a second musical just for this studio? Which character would be the focus of this potential franchise?

Some fans on Twitter shared their thoughts on this ‘Potential Franchise’

It’s not that Hamilton isn’t worthy of a sequel. Some theater fans are just wondering how that could happen. With the events of the musical being how they were, (and pretty close to being historically accurate,) Twitter users wondered who would be the focus of future Hamilton content. Or, rather, what Disney would do with this franchise.

“Potential franchise? It’s history and always been there. Disney’s Historic Cinematic Universe coming fall 2021,” one Twitter user joked.

“King George III no doubt being the Thanos of the universe,” another Twitter user wrote.

“‘Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln’ to be replaced with ‘Historical Revisionism with Mr. Hamilton,’” another Twitter user wrote. There is good news for these fans on Twitter, though — Disney has not shared plans for branching off from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical.

Hamilton premieres in theaters on Oct. 15, 2021.
