The Biggest Pop Culture Moments of 2019 Revealed

As 2019 comes to a close, there’s a lot to look back on. Notable events in pop culture include the release of the record-breaking Marvel movie Avengers: Endgame, the launch of streaming service Disney+, and plenty of other things that don’t have to do with just one company (though many of them do). Here’s a look at the most-searched pop culture moments of 2019, as tracked by SEMrush.

The release of 3 new albums

Numbers 9-11 on this list were all related to music. Fans searched for “Kanye West’s new album,” “Taylor Swift’s new album,” and “Ed Sheeran’s new album” more than any other’s in the industry. And their order makes sense, regardless of popularity — as West’s album was released last, Swift’s second, and Sherran’s first.

The first album in question is West’s ninth, Jesus Is King, which he dropped on Oct. 25, 2019, after numerous delays. Swift’s seventh album, Lover, was first announced earlier in the year and was released on Aug. 23. Finally, Sheeran’s album, titled No.6 Collaborations Project, came on on July 12, 2019.

The arrival of 3 famous babies

The best things do seem to come in threes, don’t they? Numbers 6, 7, and 2 on this list are all around surrounding the births of three infants born to famous people. And we have a feeling you’ll be able to guess whose children they are.

The No. 6 search was for “Kim Kardashian’s baby.” Kardashian and her husband West welcomed their fourth child into the world in May 2019, a son named Psalm. No. 5, “Cardi B’s baby,” refers to her daughter, Kulture, with rapper Offset, who was actually born in 2018. And finally, No. 2 is “Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby,” who was born to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on May 6, 2019.

Celebrity marriages (and divorces)

Babies and new releases are great. But a lot of people are more interested in the relationship status (and all the details that come with it) of their favorite celebrities. And three of those big names are on this list.

No. 7 on the list of searched terms is “Jennifer Lawrence’s wedding.” The very private Oscar-winning actress had an eventful year, getting engaged to art gallery director Cooke Maroney in February. and tying the knot in October. Meanwhile, a much more public celeb, Justin Bieber, celebrated his anniversary with wife Hailey Bieber by having a big celebration on Sept 30, 2019, earning “Justin Bieber’s wedding” the No. 3 spot.

Of course, not all searches are for happy events. Coming in just below Bieber at No. 4 is “Jeff Bezos’ divorce.” The Amazon CEO announced his pending divorce from wife MacKenzie Tuttle in January, finalizing it in April, more than 25 years later.

The No. 1 most-searched event

Before we announced the No. 1 slot, there’s one miscellaneous item. No. 8, “Kevin Hart’s new movie,” didn’t fall under any other category. What’s more, this could be referring to any number of his 2019 projects, though the evidence points to Jumanji: The Next Level, which came out on Dec. 13, 2019.

But — drumroll, please — the most-searched pop culture moment is one that’s been ongoing for quite some time, though it’s recently reached a new peak. No. 1 is “Trump’s impeachment,” referring to the articles recently filed against the 45th president of the U.S. This is one topic that’s sure to end up on the 2020 roundup, as it’s far from over.
