Why The Film ‘Cats’ Was Re-Released

Cats was expected to be a box-office smash, especially being released during the Christmas season. Unfortunately, the film has yet to do the numbers the studio and producers hoped for. Film reviews for the film have been less than stellar and audiences have not taken to the visual effects included in the film. Even some of its stars felt the film was offbeat. Making matters worse, the studio announced a re-release of the movie due to such negative reviews and a massive editing miss.

‘Cats’ is released and considered a flop

Cats has been a film years in the making. The most recent release is the current run, which is a musical fantasy film based upon the stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The stage play was derived from a poetry collection from T.S. Elliot that was released in 1939. An animated adaption based on the musical was in talks in the 1990s but was shelved after the studio who was set to produce the film closed. Webber began making plans to bring the musical to the big screen again in 2013 and over the next few years, casting was announced.

The musical film features an ensemble star-studded cast, including James Corden, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and many more. The film was released in the U.S. and in the United Kingdom Dec. 20 by Universal Pictures after months of heavy promotion.

Cats received generally negative reviews from critics about the special effects, plot, and tone. With a production budget of $100 million, the film only generated an estimated $2.6 million opening day. Bigger issues came after news surfaced that the film has to be released due to a huge editing oversight.

‘Cats’ to be re-released in theaters after editing mishap and horrible reviews

With the success of the stage show, Cats was a highly anticipated release but drew in smaller audiences than expected. Moreso, critics were harsh on the film. The Hollywood Reporter named the film one of the 10 Worst Movies of 2019 as reported by Page Six. The review pointed out that the special effects of the film didn’t do the film justice.

“While it busies itself trying with lots of frantic camerawork and fast cutting, the movie never gets around the fundamental misjudgment of its central visual concept, with the digitized human-kitty hybrids looking just plain weird at best, creepy at worst.”

Viewers also noted a huge editing mistake. In one of the scenes, actress Judi Dench – a famed ballerina who made her film debut in Cats – can be seen with her human hand instead of the paw of her character. Variety editor, Jenelle Riley, notes that the mistake is due to Cats being rushed to theaters without proper editing.

“This isn’t a joke: CATS was rushed into theaters before being finished so a new version is being sent to theaters with updated effects,” she Tweeted. “How do you know if you have the old version? Look for Judi Dench’s human hand, wedding ring and all.” The tweet was accompanied by a photo of the ring on full display as proof.

The New York Post reported that the updated movie became available for download on Sunday Dec. 22 for cinemas using a satellite server. Those who didn’t have access was able to receive it by Christmas Eve. Hopefully the re-release produces a bump in ticket sales.
