This loyal, brave, and true warrior is getting a rebooted version of her story. Disney will premiere the live-action adaptation of Mulan sometime during 2020. General Li Shang will not appear in Disney’s live-action reboot of ‘Mulan’

Disney fans all know the story of the studios’ animated film. Mulan saves China, bringing honor to her family in the process. If you asked her grandmother, however, she should’ve brought home a man. Well, she kind of did, eventually inviting her commanding officer to dinner.

In the sequel to Mulan, Shang and Mulan’s relationship is pretty much solidified, as well as Li Shang’s title as an “LGBTQ icon,” for falling in love with Mulan when she was dressed as a man.  For one Bustle article, one producer explained the changes to this story as they apply to current events and views of femininity.

“I think particularly in the time of the #MeToo movement, having a commanding officer that is also the sexual love interest was very uncomfortable,” Mulan producer Jason Reed said. As a result, a new character earns Mulan’s heart, a soldier named Honghui, portrayed by Yoson An.

Mulan has a new love interest named Chen Honghui

There’s a new man in Mulan’s life. Although not much is known about Honghui, we know he fights alongside Hua Mulan, and the two eventually fall in love. Actor Yoson An elaborated on their relationship during a few interviews ahead of the movie’s cinematic debut.

“They start off on the wrong foot,” Yoson An said. “As they progress through the trainings together, they kind of have this unspoken bond about it because they recognize each other’s warrior spirit.”

There’s no word regarding whether or not Chen Honghui will inherit the same LGBTQ title as General Li Shang. Still, according to Bustle, the actor is ready to inherit the title and the role it plays for audience members. Disney has not revealed whether this will be an openly LGBTQ character, (like LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast.)

There are a few other changes to this version of ‘Mulan’

General Shang isn’t the only character noticeably missing from this reboot. In an effort to share similarities to the Chinese fable, The Ballad of Mulan, the powerful, pleasurable, and indestructible Mushu will be excluded. Still, fans look forward to seeing Hua Mulan on the silver screen.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait just a little bit longer to meet Honghui and the rest of the characters in this live-action adaptation. Due to the coronavirus surge, the movie has since been postponed by Disney, according to an Instagram post from director Niki Caro.

More information regarding Mulan will presumably be announced in the coming weeks. Until then, fans can stream the original animated movie and its sequel on Disney’s platform. To learn more about Disney+ and to subscribe, visit their website.
