Adele Joins James Corden For His final “Carpool Karaoke”

As the friends reflect on the last decade, they know that they have had the best time here and here too soon.

“The Late Late Show” is officially coming to a close on April 28, and with it the end of segments like “Carpool Karaoke,” “Drop the Mic,” “Crosswalk Musical,” and “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts.” Before James Corden takes his last bow as the show’s host, Adele joined her longtime friend for one final segment of “Carpool Karaoke.” After more than a decade of friendship, the duo sang their hearts out to a medley of Adele’s greatest hits, including “Rolling in the Deep,” “Love Is A Game,” and “Hometown Glory.”

Before they hopped in the car, Adele paid a visit to Corden’s Los Angeles home. “F*ck. What’s going on?” Corden asked when she woke him up by clanging together a pair of cymbals. Once Corden was out of bed, the “Easy on Me” singer began the drive to Television City, taking over Corden’s usual hosting spot as she interviewed him about his time on the show. During the drive, Corden reminisced about the friends he’s made in his eight years as “The Late Late Show”‘s host and some of his favorite “Carpool Karaoke” memories, including the first segment featuring Mariah Carey and Adele’s first appearance on the show in 2015.

In between songs, Corden also brought up Adele’s EGOT status, pointing out that she’s one Tony away from the honor. “I really don’t think that is ever going to happen,” Adele said candidly. “I would never write a musical or anything like that because I f*cking hate musicals.” The singer added that she respects the art form, but, “I just don’t need to hear everything in f*cking song all the time. I also think the EGO suits me better.” Still, she and Corden delivered a masterful performance of “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from “Funny Girl,” and it was nice to see the artist showcase her vocal skills with songs outside of her own catalogue.

As the friends continued to reflect on the last decade, Adele also recalled a deep conversation she had with Corden that inspired her to write “I Drink Wine.” “It was everything that I was feeling that day,” Corden said of the first time Adele sent him the lyrics. “I was floored by how you’d managed to take everything that I was feeling about myself and life and just put it in a verse, and it was the greatest privilege.”

Corden was also grateful to Adele for taking the time to make one final guest appearance on the show. “This is my last ever time that I’ll do this and it’s blown my mind that you’ve done this for me,” he said. Though the distance means they won’t get to spend as much time together, Corden said he feels now is the time for his family to return to the UK. As he put it: “I’m just so certain that it’s time for us, as a family — with people getting older and people that we miss — it’s time to go home.”

After wiping away a few tears, the pair shared a hug and laughed, realizing that — despite the sentimental drive — they’d be seeing each other again tomorrow. “I’m going to miss you so much,” Adele said tearfully. She added, “You’re one of my best friends in the whole world.” While there may be a few thousand miles between them once Corden moves back to the UK, they won’t let the distance keep them apart.

“I love you,” Corden told Adele. “We have had the best times here and our friendship and our families’ friendship have nothing to do with distance and time.”

The final episode of “The Late Late Show” will air on CBS on Thursday, April 28 at 12:37 a.m. ET.
