After years of anticipation, the “Wicked” movie is finally coming to life. In November 2021, director Jon M. Chu (who directed “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights”) announced that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo would be starring as Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. On Dec. 9, 2022, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, Aaron Teoh, and Colin Michael Carmichael joined the cast. Jeff Goldblum was also confirmed to be playing the Wizard, which had been previously rumored. The day before this announcement, Michelle Yeoh was added to the cast as Madame Morrible. Yeoh won her first-ever Oscar award at the 2023 ceremony for her role in 2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and most recently appeared in Netflix’s “The School For Good and Evil.” Jonathan Bailey from “Bridgerton” was also cast as Fiyero, the story’s main love interest.
In April 2022, Chu revealed that they would be splitting the musical into two films. The first movie is set to be released Christmas 2024 and the second will hit theaters Christmas 2025. Grande shared some Instagram photos from “Wicked” rehearsals in October 2022, and Chu has kept fans updated with exciting announcements ever since.
