The Bauchi State Police Command has seized 23 illegal firearms and ammunition from criminals in the area. SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, spokesperson for the police in the state, announced this on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. The command has been given additional resources and heightened security to ensure peace during the upcoming gubernatorial and state assembly elections, while efforts to collect illicit firearms continue.
The statement read that the command is following the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, to reduce the spread of small and light weapons in the state. As a result of their daring operations, they have recovered nine AK47 rifles, seven assorted locally-made firearms, one Light Assault Rifle (LAR), six Dane guns, and eighteen rifle magazines. Additionally, eighty-seven rounds of live ammunition of various calibres were found, including twenty-two rounds of 7×62.51mm NATO ammunitions, nine rounds of 7×62.39mm ammunitions, seven 9mm live ammunitions, four machetes, and one knife. Three military camouflages were also recovered.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Aminu Alhassan psc (+), has promised to provide adequate security during and after the 2023 Gubernatorial and state assembly election.
